This year hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words "YOU HAVE CANCER" and there's a good chance that some of them will be people we know and love. We have all be touched by cancer in some way.....and we all have the power to make a difference. That's why I have chosen to fight back right here in my own community be participating in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. This wonderful event is going to be taken place at Westside High School on May 15th, 2009. Yes I know this seem like a LONG time awhile but we are needing as many people to join us in this wondering event. Please contact me if you are interested in joining my team or to create your own team. Together along with the 3.5 million people across the country we can celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer,remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease that takes ways too much.

The Singburi projects are part of a larger campaign and efforts to stimulate rural development with the support of International Voluntary Service. We believe that the impact of the international volunteers in rural communities is an important stimulus to open minds and reduce prejudices. We work a lot with rural areas to transmit these values to the villagers. The main objective of the international volunteer project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers. The participants in the project will also practically work in the communities, getting involved in several kinds of support and development works, such as construction of a village house or a school, etc. The exact nature of the work will depend of the needs of the village at the time of the project.

Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the culture of rural Thailand in general and the traditions and specificity of the Central region. Thai language lessons will also be given to the volunteers.

Special requirements: No special profile is required for this project, but having experience in construction work will be appreciated. Nature lovers and ethnologists will particularly enjoy the project. Adaptability is required from the volunteers.

Age range: 18 and over

Volunteer project: The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the protection turtle program promoting international cooperation and solidarity.

The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators it is safer for the turtles go out in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, will work with the group and will explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work of protection of the turtle are needed for this camp.

Language: The official language of the workcamp is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.

Location: Colola is a small town located in the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, in a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer can offer Internet connection.

Feathered Friends Forever, America's largest exotic/endangered parrot sanctuary now has almost 650 birds on site. They need help feeding, cleaning and building new aviaries. If you have community service hours, this sure beats picking up trash on the highway.

If you know anyone with a bulldozer who wants some practice, there are 4 acres that need to be cleared.

I am having to move out of my apartment this Saturday and have been unable to find any physical assistance. I'm selling off much of my stuff and having some of it picked up by local charities, but I have a severely painful lower back condition that prevents my being able to move things easily.
