The Charvel Model 4 was at the top of the bolt on-neck line and is a (super) strat guitar. Its thin, quarter-sawn rock maple neck has a satin finish and a wide, flat Rosewood fingerboard. Jackson guitars were produced at the Chushin Gakki factory in Japan during the 1980s and 1990s.
The body is basswood – medium weight, but solid. Grover Jackson chose a pointy headstock design that was popular among a new generation of guitar players. It has an HSS pickup configuration. The J-200 pickups are actually Dual coils in a single coil housing. The humbucker a J50BC with “accentuated high frequency.” Like most good active pickup systems, it has a clean, wide frequency response with no noise. Besides the passive pickups the Model 4 also featured Jackson's JE-1200 active preamp with mid boost. The 3 toggles are on/off for each pickup, the vibrato is a Fred Rose JT-6 Original and controls are one Volume, one Tone, and a pre-amp midrange boost/cut. The nut is phenolic. The Charvel Model 4 is designed with advanced players in mind, featuring high-quality components and a versatile pickup configuration that supports intricate playing styles from warm, full humbucker sounds suitable for rock and metal, to bright, clear single-coil tones ideal for blues and pop.
The Chu Shin Model 4 proved highly successful for Charvel – so much so that in 1987 they upgraded it with a bound fingerboard and MOP-shark’s teeth inlays. This Model 4 has a serial # of --- 308503--- meaning production of late 1988.
